CB - Center Bore

Center Bore

CB is an abbreviation for the English term "Center Bore." This measurement indicates the diameter of the center hole, or hub hole, where the car's wheel axle should fit. To prevent vibrations, it's essential that the hub hole is properly centered.

When selecting wheels for your car, it's important to choose wheels with the correct CB. Some wheels come pre-drilled to fit directly, while others may require hub rings to adapt the wheel's center hole to the car's hub. However, please note that this method only works if the CB measurement on the wheel is larger than your car's CB measurement.

How do you measure CB?

On the wheel, you measure the inner diameter of the center hole (A).

On the hub, you measure the outer diameter of the axle that protrudes into the center of the brake disc (B).

Measuring with Special Tools

Depending on how the wheel is designed, it can be challenging to measure the inner diameter of the wheel with, for example, a caliper. For this purpose, there is a specialized T-shaped tool. This tool has a knob at the bottom of the T, and by turning this knob, you can increase the outer diameter of the upper axle, allowing for more accurate measurement.

How do I know what Center Bore (CB) my car has?

It is usually stated in your car's owner's manual. If you don't have access to it, you can use the tool above.

Is it important to have the correct CB on the wheel?

Yes, if you mount a wheel with too small of a CB, it can get stuck on the hub. If you mount a wheel with a CB value that is too short without using hub rings, there is a risk that the wheel will not be properly centered. This can lead to vibrations while driving, and in the worst case, it can cause damage to your car.

Can you mount a wheel with a different CB value than what is recommended for the car?

Yes, a wheel with a higher CB than your car's recommended CB can be mounted, but hub rings must be used.

Is it only CB that determines if a wheel fits?

No, other measurements like offset (ET) and the wheel's Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) also come into play.
